transgender and (there were even some bio-males) discussing the inter-racial tensions of being queer women of color+LGBTQ and how they feel about how their lives and the lives of their partners. The event was hosted by the Center of New Words (CNW) and their motto, “Where Women’s Words Matter” as one of their monthly, “Feminism and Desert” Workshops where Program Director of CNW, Jaclyn Friedman presides over tonight’s very informative Diversity Speaks On Love, Friendship, and Family: A Discussion On Interracial Relationships Within The Queer Community Along with members of the Queer Women of Color (QWOC):(I hope I have their names spelled right…) Adora Asala, Tikesha Morgan, and D'hana Perry talked and discussed their lives with the rest of us and trying to describe: “What it must feel like being a ‘women of color’ in today’s society and how it impacts in today’s corporate environment. “How it might feel being in a inter-racial relationship with another white women and the issues that they bring together?” Or how inconsiderate some people are when a total stranger tries to touch your gorgeous hair (that it took you two hours to fix just perfect and then insult the way it looks!) just because it’s in a gorgeous bun,” or that your wear it in “dreadlocks” or maybe because you decided to “just shave it all off” and they want to know how it feels. Are some people just insane?
These were just some of the issues raised tonight and just a sampling of the week long celebration of QWOC Week. QWOC is a grassroots organization founded in 2006.
