This month I meet a very talented, intelligent poet, motivational speaker and

author of two books. At the CNW’s “Feminism and Desert” Workshop for March 2009, Ms. Joyce Angela Jellison whose daily writings can be found at Frog Buddha Po-et-Tree

and you won’t want to miss her presenting with Letta Nelly on a workshop on “black women and self publishing as a means to diversify the media landscape (WAM 2009 Saturday March 28, 2009; 2:00-3:30 PM Session, “Run Go Tell Dis: writing and self-publishing our stories…Joyce Angela Jellison and Letta Neely presenters)

At CNW Ms. Jellison gave a informative and lively talk that had the members in the audience laughing off their seats. Beautiful in spirit and very intelligent, she knows her stuff. “Why wait for Random House to call? My book is out there now…” Her beautiful young daughter Stormi Maya Jellison did the awesome graphic deign for Ms. Jellison’s book, “Black Apple” She is also the author of “Where Everything Fits Beautifully” and lives in the Boston area while working on her next book and teaches workshops on self publishing and writing skills.

CNW Book Signing Event "Cartoonists Mikhaela Reid and Masheka Wood"

On Friday evening, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting two of the most talented, upcoming cartoonists, Mikhaela Reid and Masheka Wood at a public showing of their artwork at the Center of New Words:Where Women’s Words Matter located in Cambridge, MA.

The event marked the presention of both cartoonists and their new books, Attack of the 50 ft. Mikhaela and Masheka Wood’s Deep Doodle

They set up a computer film projector and showed their artwork on the screen and mostly talked about how the ideas of both books came about and the lives of cartoonists. The candid spirit of the audience members made it a very pleasant evening and it was exciting to actually hear two cartoonists talk about their books.

”...Mikhaela’s cartoons have appeared in Metro Times, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Phoenix, In These Times, Ms., and Funny Times. Reid was featured in the 2006 exhibit “She Draws Comics: A Century of Women Cartoonists…”

”...The 2007 Glyph Awards Nominees have just been announced… and fellow Cartoonist With Attitude Masheka Wood has been nominated for the Rising Star Award…”

I love the spectacular artwork inside both books and if you get a chance stop by both their web sites and see for yourself or better yet order both books, you won’t be disappointed. When I was there I had no idea that both Mikhaela and Masheka became recently married together. Their future plans are the possibility to animate their cartoons. That would something to see. Kudos!
